The sugars and starches in the foods combine with the bacteria that live in the mouth and form acids. These acids damage the tooth enamel and cause decay. For healthy teeth, it is best to avoid foods and drinks with high sugar content. Also, brush the teeth at least twice a day using a toothpaste that contains fluoride, and use an antimicrobial mouth rinse to reduce plaque formation. Have regular visits to your dentist for checkups and dental cleanings.
Treating decayed teeth depends on the extent of the decay. If the damage has not yet reached the nerve of the tooth, the dentist usually removes the decayed tooth structure and replaces it with a dental filling. If the decay has already reached the nerve of the tooth, a root canal treatment may be performed.
